Cancer Comedy
by dubessa

I've noticed there seem to be a number of comedians in the OuterNet.  Maybe I could get some feedback about this?

I came down with Acute Myeloid Leukemia Aug. 2001.  I spent 3 years fighting it.  I've now been in remission for 4 years.

I have a number of stories I find really funny. Like when I turned purple all over from a reaction to a medication. Or the things people would say to me.  I had an acquaintence(sic) of mine ask me to put in a good word about her to my husband, so he'd know someone was interested after I was dead. As I said, I have alot of stories.

Do you think a cancer comedy routine would work? Oh, and pleasae don't call me a 'survivor'.  I think it's waaaay overused.

I spent alot of time laughing when I was ill. Of course, I still do!

I have been performing stand-up comedy on and off for about 3 years. I was cured of cancer (I don't like the word remission, sounds too much like intermission..lol) 3 years ago as well. Cancer was the kick in the ass I needed to go out and pursue this wacky dream of being a stand-up comedian, and it's a large part of my act and for the most part it works well. I would be happy to discuss my experience with you in great detail and answer any questions you might have.  Your right about the laughter! I would make it a point to make all my doctors and nurses laugh everyday. I couldn't imagine having to deal with their work day, so I did what I could to make them smile.

Sure a cancer routine would work. People would find it inspirational that you pulled through with such a good spirit. I always wanted to do a skit about Cerebral Palsy but since I don't have it I thought it wouldn't go over well. This same theory has limited my jokes about ovarian prolapse, incestual swinging, mexican car washes and african american buungee jumping. Sometimes I wish there was a pill I could take to be a jew for a day just so I can tell jokes without being called a bigot. Go ahead, knock em dead about near death!
