It seems I have found myself right smack in the middle of the universe for studying humor. According to a new research poll the University of Michigan is now offically the center of humor studies of the entire world -very intense research is being done there to study how humor is effective in helping to heal, releave pain, cope with stress and now- to educate.
Sooo if I could blow my own horn...I couldn't be happier to have long been part of this in my own way having held my stand up classes (6 years running the comedy dojo as it's called) at the historic Comedy Showcase comedy club right on campus in Ann Arbor, MI. In this class I have had some of Ann Arbor's finest, business owners, police officers, students, professors, and a ton of funny people from Detroit and surrounding areas.
Presently
I am directly involved (which means I have college funding baby!!!) in writing a standup comedy project along with 'artist in residence'- theater director of the university (one of my students in the dojo by the way). Once completed it will be performed at colleges all over the country to help aid educators in the use of comedy. We already have a waiting list of universities to see it.
Perhaps comedy is finally getting the respect it deserves as not only an art form but a necessary part of human existence. I can only dream.
Wish me luck my friends. As a person who has been obsessed with stand up since the 5th grade this former staff writer for NBC's the Tonight Show is finally feeling very centered!
